Hamadan

Farsfaj Caravanserai

One of the caravanserais of Hamadan Province, "Shah Abbasi Farsfaj" caravanserai is located 23 km southwest of Tuyserkan and 5 km from Tuyserkan-Kangavar road. The caravanserai is built in the Safavid style of architecture and is a rectangular caravanserai with 4 porches with 4 circular towers in its 4 corners and 3 semicircular towers in the middle of the east, west and north sides. In the upper part of the towers, there are several rows of “Kongereyi” brickwork, and in addition to the decorative aspect, the towers have also been used for observation. The caravanserai, with its thick walls and brick arched ceilings, is extremely strong and has many interconnected rooms with porches and rugs that are suitable for travelers to rest in. In the center of this caravanserai, there is a water spring that has the same amount of discharge in all seasons of the year and very refreshing water flows from it.

Tajabad Caravanserai

It is a beautiful caravanserai built after Islam in Safavid Period in Tajabad-e Sofla Village by “Banu Jahan Qajar”, a descendant of Fath Ali Shah and Haj Mirza Ali Naqi Kowsar Hamadani. The caravanserai is located in the central part of the village in Hamadan, next to the Hamadan-Kermanshah road. Tajabad Caravanserai is a “Ribat”, and unlike most Iranian caravanserais that have a rectangular plan, this caravanserai has a circular plan. This plan is very rare among Iranian caravanserais and there are only three caravanserais in Iran in this type and this is one of the most important caravanserais in the western region. This caravanserai was registered in 1997 with the registration number 1872 as a national monument of Iran. The entrance door of the building from the east has two decorative arches and a modern view on which there are two wooden doors. This part is the entrance to the lower stables and rooms. In front of the caravanserai, there are 26 rooms, the floor of the courtyard of the caravanserai is paved and there are 2 water wells inside the building. The main materials used in the construction of Tajabad Caravanserai are red brick and “Sarooj” mortar. In 2009, an order was issued to repair the Tajabad Caravanserai in Hamadan. According to period studies, the caravanserai is larger than similar tombs and will, therefore, take more time to repair and rebuild. Another thing about this beautiful building is that the approximate time frame for the construction of the building is estimated, but the exact time of the construction of the building has never been provided, and the reason is that there is no inscription or brickwork or tiling in the building.

According to the inscriptions left by Safavid Shah Suleiman (1077-1105 AH) in this building, it seems that the construction of this caravanserai was completed during the reign of Shah Suleiman and the presidency of Sheikh Ali Khan Zanganeh. This place was restored during the reign of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar and Sadrat Mirza Agha Khan Nouri by Haji Jafar Khan Memar Bashi Asfani. The style and context of this caravanserai is following the architectural pattern of the caravanserais of the Safavid period. This precious work is located in the most densely populated area of the city on the west side of Hafez Street (north door) and Bozorg Square or Gap (East Gate) - in terms of having historical monuments such as Bath Gap, Gap Bazaar (Charso Bazaar or Chaharsooq), The house of Poor Abolghasemi, the tomb of Babataher, the house of Akhund Abu, the castle of Falak al-Aflak, the house of Kashfiha, the Hamam Bashi, Garmabeh Noei, Zurkhaneh Tayeb, etc., is very important. Importantly, if the Tafreshi Caravanserai, along with the other works mentioned above, be in a good condition, it can be very effective in the process of global registration of Falak al-Aflak Castle but unfortunately, this valuable and vital attraction has been exposed to damage that, if left unchecked and untreated, could lead to a tragic fate.

Its alternative names are Gadik Caravanserai, Shah Abbasi Caravanserai, and Rezakhani Shelter. It is built During the Safavid period and in the year 1000 AH by the order of Shah Abbas. Of course, some archaeologists believe that due to the geographical location of Gaduk Caravanserai, on the axis of commuting from center to the north of the country, the possibility that Gaduk Caravanserai may date back to before the Safavid period is high. Due to the seizure of the Mazandaran Road and Urban Development Department, it is not possible to visit. Due to its geographical location and extreme cold, Gaduk Caravanserai is a type of caravanserai with mountain architecture and is completely covered. The covered mountain caravanserais consist of central domed rooms or a row of domes and some stables located in the same row. Most of these caravanserais are without a yard, with multiple stoves or wall heaters inside the building. They are also closed and covered on all sides and can easily prevent annoying winds, winter snow, and spring and autumn hail, and protect caravans from such damages. Gaduk Caravanserai is built on a land area of 30 by 40 meters with stone, brick, plaster, mortar, and lime materials, and they have used plastered bricks to decorate the interior and exterior of Gaduk Caravanserai. The entrance door of Gaduk Caravanserai is from the west and leads you to the main corridor of the caravanserai. On both the north and south sides of the main corridor of Gaduk Caravanserai, there are sub corridors. Unfortunately, some walls are covered with current day bricks with an unprofessional restoration and due to the same reason most of the rooms and walls are destroyed with the entrance of the transport machinery.

In this area, the magnificent Hassanabad Caravanserai and a brick Chapar Khaneh and arched openings of the Dalak Bridge are built on the river are next to each other. On the north side of the river and Dallak Bridge, the Dallak Caravanserai building which is rectangular and white is located with its unique porches that are made of brick and stone. The other two rooms are located on either side of the entrance to the caravanserai, which has entrance both from the porch and courtyard, which were probably used for the accommodation of the guards and janitors of the caravanserai. Creating a traditional dining hall, a place to hold religious, cultural, artistic, and national festivals and ceremonies, creating accommodation and a bird-watching base are some of the facilities and services provided in this caravanserai. This caravanserai that belongs to the Safavid period, is located between Aveh hill and its newly inhabited settlement, which is attributed to the Safavid period. Considering that during the Mongol period, the whole city was destroyed by them, there is only one possibility, and that is to consider the construction of the building during the Safavid period that Shah Abbas was interested in the developing of Iran, hence, several caravanserais had been made in Shah Abbas's order. Also, in this period, brick materials and stone foundations have been seen in caravanserais similar to this building, which belongs to this period. The four domed spaces built in the corners of the courtyard have different dimensions and the components of their walls are different. The holes in the rooms around the courtyard, drawn in a semicircular shape in the plan, were wall heaters. At a distance of 21.70 meters from the entrance of the caravanserai, the domed staircase leads to the underground reservoir and Two tower-like vents of the water reservoir are still standing. Due to Aveh's strategic and economic status, and its location on commercial routes in various historical periods it has been used for commercial and residential purposes and as there were secure and military elements that were not found there, it cannot be considered as a military caravanserai. Other reasons include the availability of livelihoods in archaeological research of this area. The caravanserai, with an area of about 2,255 square meters, has a central courtyard and is one of the caravanserais with a symmetrical plan, which is built in the form of four porches. The main porches are located on the two main axes of the building - the north-south axis and the east-west axis - which are on a square plan.
